Containers Overboard at Long Beach
Operations at the Port of Long Beach were disrupted on September 9 after more than 60 shipping containers fell overboard from the cargo ship Mississippi at Pier G.
The vessel, sailing under the Portuguese flag, had just arrived from Yantian, China, when stacks of containers toppled from its deck into the harbor. A total of 67 containers were reported in the water. No injuries were recorded, and officials said none of the fallen containers contained hazardous materials.
The incident forced Pier G to suspend operations while cleanup crews and the Coast Guard worked to recover the containers and secure the area. Several containers also struck the STAX 2, an emissions-capture barge that was alongside the Mississippi at the time, though no major damage was reported.
Port officials have not yet confirmed the cause of the collapse. Investigators are expected to review cargo-securing practices, vessel stability, and equipment performance as part of the inquiry.
The Port of Long Beach, together with the Port of Los Angeles, handles nearly 40 percent of U.S. containerized imports. Any disruption at its terminals can quickly ripple through national supply chains. Industry stakeholders are watching closely to see how long Pier G remains partially shut and whether shipping schedules will be affected. Watch Clip

VIDEO OF THE WEEK
Why Everyone Is Buying Gold Right Now
Gold is the most expensive it's ever been. Hitting record highs several times this year. The high price is pushing more people to invest in it — buying gold from Costco, selling gold jewelry, and extracting gold from electronic waste. But what is causing it to spike?
TRADE SNIPPETS
Supreme Court grants unusually quick hearing on legality of Trump’s trade tariffs. The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to fast-track a review of former President Trump’s sweeping tariffs, scheduled for November, after lower courts ruled most were illegal under emergency authority.
US Coast Guard seizes 13,000 pounds of cocaine in Pacific. Operation Pacific Viper intercepted nearly 13,000 pounds of cocaine over the weekend, with seven suspected smugglers arrested. The bust highlights ongoing efforts to disrupt drug trafficking routes across the Pacific.
Ice-class cargo ship runs aground in Northwest Passage. The Dutch vessel Thamesborg grounded in Franklin Strait on Sept. 6 while carrying carbon blocks from Asia to Quebec. No injuries or spills were reported, though its hull sustained damage.
