TRADE NEWS
Tariffs Paused, But the Greenland Issue is Far From Over
After days of rising tension, the immediate trade threat surrounding Greenland appears to have eased — but the underlying geopolitical stakes are now clearer than ever. Over the past 48 hours, Donald Trump has confirmed the U.S. will step back from previously threatened tariffs on several European partners, following what he described as a “framework” for future cooperation tied to Greenland’s strategic role in the Arctic. Markets welcomed the move, seeing it as a signal that a broader transatlantic trade dispute had been avoided — at least for now.
Behind the scenes, the focus has shifted from tariffs to security and access. The latest reporting suggests the U.S. is pushing for expanded long-term rights to operate on specific parcels of Greenlandic land, potentially allowing new or expanded military and surveillance infrastructure. This would not involve a change in sovereignty, but rather negotiated access agreements similar to long-term defence leases.
Greenland already hosts a major U.S. base, but accelerating Arctic ice melt, emerging shipping routes, and growing interest in rare earth minerals have dramatically raised the region’s strategic value. Washington sees the island as critical to missile warning systems and Arctic defence, particularly as Russian and Chinese activity in the region increases.
Officials in Denmark and Greenland have reiterated that the territory is not for sale, stressing that any expanded U.S. presence must respect Greenland’'s autonomy. Still, the removal of tariff pressure suggests negotiations are progressing behind closed doors. For global trade, the message is clear: while tariffs are off the table for now, Arctic security, infrastructure investment, and geopolitics are increasingly shaping trade relationships. Greenland has quietly become one of the most strategically important pieces of real estate in the global economy. Watch Clip
TOGETHER WITH TIMELINE
Science Links Mitochondria & Muscle Strength
As we age, our muscles naturally lose mass, strength, and function as certain muscle fibers shrink, leading to fatigue and weakness from as early as our 30s. Research shows this decline is closely linked to mitochondrial health — the tiny organelles that produce over 90% of the body’s energy. As mitochondrial health decreases, muscle health declines. Mitopure® by Timeline is clinically shown to boost mitochondrial health and improve muscle strength, without any change in exercise required. 500mg Mitopure® have been shown to (1) induce gene expression related to mitochondria function and metabolism and (2) increase the strength of the hamstring leg muscle in measures of knee extension and flexion after 4 months in overweight 40-65 year olds.
VIDEO OF THE WEEK
How the US Crackdown is Strangling Venezuela’s Dark Fleet
Over 1400 so-called dark fleet ships from Venezuela, Iran and Russia have been sanctioned or blacklisted by Western countries in recent years, with little impact until the current ramp up in US enforcement.
TRADE SNIPPETS
FBI links trucking-related kidnapping pattern to 850 deaths. A Mexican national connected to the trucking industry was arrested at the US border after an alleged kidnapping spree, with the FBI saying the case fits a decades-long pattern involving commercial trucking routes and linked to more than 850 deaths across the US.
Japan restarts world’s largest nuclear power plant. Japan has restarted a reactor at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear plant for the first time since the 2011 Fukushima disaster, marking a major shift as the country looks to reduce energy import reliance despite local safety concerns.
EU suspends US trade deal amid Greenland takeover row. The European Parliament has paused approval of a major US trade agreement after Donald Trump’s push to take over Greenland reignited trade tensions, briefly rattling markets before a last-minute framework deal eased tariff threats.
Dictate prompts and tag files automatically
Stop typing reproductions and start vibing code. Wispr Flow captures your spoken debugging flow and turns it into structured bug reports, acceptance tests, and PR descriptions. Say a file name or variable out loud and Flow preserves it exactly, tags the correct file, and keeps inline code readable. Use voice to create Cursor and Warp prompts, call out a variable like user_id, and get copy you can paste straight into an issue or PR. The result is faster triage and fewer context gaps between engineers and QA. Learn how developers use voice-first workflows in our Vibe Coding article at wisprflow.ai. Try Wispr Flow for engineers.
