Spain Makes Record High-Seas Cocaine Seizure in Salt Shipment from Brazil

Spanish authorities have carried out the largest maritime cocaine seizure in the country’s history, intercepting nearly 10 tonnes of cocaine hidden inside a commercial shipment of salt travelling from Brazil to Europe.

The operation unfolded in the Atlantic Ocean near the Canary Islands after intelligence agencies identified the vessel as a potential trafficking risk. Spanish special operations officers boarded the cargo ship and uncovered 294 tightly packed bales of cocaine, concealed beneath thousands of tonnes of industrial salt — a smuggling technique designed to mask scent, confuse scanners, and deter thorough inspections.

All 13 crew members onboard were arrested. Investigators also recovered a firearm, believed to have been carried to protect the illicit cargo during the voyage. Following the raid, the ship was left without fuel and drifted for several hours before being safely towed to Tenerife, where the drugs were unloaded under heavy security.

Authorities estimate the cocaine’s street value to be well into the billions of euros, making the seizure not only a law-enforcement milestone but also a significant financial blow to international drug trafficking networks. The investigation revealed extensive coordination across borders, with multiple international agencies sharing intelligence in the lead-up to the interception.

While large drug seizures at sea aren’t unusual, the scale and method used in this case stand out. Hiding cocaine inside a routine bulk shipment of salt shows just how easily criminal networks can piggyback on legitimate trade flows. For anyone involved in shipping, freight, or logistics, it’s a reminder that even the most ordinary cargo can be abused — and why intelligence sharing and basic supply-chain checks remain critical across global trade routes.
