TRADE NEWS

Trump’s New Tariff Order

On April 2, 2025, President Donald J. Trump declared a national economic emergency and signed an order under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), launching a major tariff strategy. Went went through the document so you dont have too. Below is the high level overview.

🔧 What’s Changing?
  • April 3, 2025: A 25% tariff applies to imported cars, SUVs, minivans, cargo vans, and light trucks.

    • USMCA-compliant vehicles can avoid this on U.S.-produced content—but documentation must be submitted to CBP at time of import.

  • April 4, 2025: A 25% tariff on beer and empty aluminum cans based on the aluminum content.

  • April 5, 2025: A universal 10% tariff will apply to all imports from all countries.

  • April 9, 2025: Countries with the largest trade deficits with the U.S. will face higher “reciprocal” tariffs, tailored to reflect the imbalance.

  • May 2, 2025: The de minimis exemption—which currently allows imports valued under $800 to enter duty-free—will be eliminated, starting with packages from China and Hong Kong, and eventually expanded to other countries.

Why This Is Happening

According to the Trump administration, the U.S. has:

  • Run a $1.2 trillion goods trade deficit in 2024.

  • Lost over 5 million manufacturing jobs since 1997.

  • Become dependent on adversaries for critical goods, including defense inputs and pharmaceuticals.

🧾 Who's Exempt?
  • USMCA-compliant goods from Canada and Mexico remain tariff-free (0%).

  • Non-compliant goods still face existing 25% or 10% tariffs under prior IEEPA orders.

  • Key items excluded: pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, energy, bullion, copper, lumber, and goods already under Section 232 tariffs.

🛠️ What to Expect

Tariff levels may adjust based on partner responses. The aim, Trump says, is not isolation, but fairness: “Treat us like we treat you.”

Bottom Line: Importers should reassess sourcing strategies, review tariff exposure, and prepare for April’s implementation. The U.S. trade playbook is being rewritten.
