Trump Announces 90-Day Pause on Tariffs

In a significant policy pivot, President Donald Trump has announced a 90-day pause on all new tariff increases, giving most U.S. trading partners temporary relief. However, this pause does not eliminate existing tariffs. A universal 10% base tariff on all imports into the U.S. is already in effect and remains active during the pause.

This means that for the next three months, no additional duties will be added — unless you're China. In a sharp escalation, the U.S. has raised tariffs on Chinese imports to 125%, citing long-standing trade imbalances and intellectual property concerns.

The pause is expected to impact over $1.2 trillion in global trade, temporarily halting planned tariff hikes on key imports such as machinery, food products, and vehicles. Financial markets responded with optimism. The S&P 500 rose 9.5%—its strongest single-day gain since 2008—while the tech-heavy Nasdaq jumped 12.2%. European and Asian markets mirrored the rally, with gains between 5% and 8%.

But tensions with China remain at a boiling point. In retaliation, Beijing has imposed up to 84% tariffs on select U.S. goods, including agricultural exports and semiconductors. Analysts warn that if the standoff continues, U.S.-China trade volumes could fall by as much as 60–80% in 2025, leading to higher costs and supply chain delays across multiple sectors.

Despite short-term relief for many exporters and importers, global trade remains on edge. Businesses are bracing for further policy swings, while economists debate whether this is a calculated step toward broader reform—or simply a political maneuver. The next 90 days will be crucial in determining whether diplomacy takes hold or the tariff war deepens further. Watch clip

US Reclaims Strategic Footing at Panama Canal

The United States is re-establishing a strong security presence in Panama as part of a broader effort to counter growing Chinese influence in the region. During a three-day summit in Panama City, U.S. Defense representative Pete Hegseth emphasized that the Panama Canal — a vital global trade route — must remain under secure, neutral management, free from coercion by rival powers.

In a clear rebuke to China’s expanding role in strategic infrastructure, Hegseth announced a new security partnership with Panama. The two nations signed a memorandum of understanding that lays the groundwork for joint training, military cooperation, and enhanced cyber and intelligence efforts.

A future declaration will allow U.S. naval vessels to travel “first and free” through the canal. Discussions are also underway to revive three former U.S. military sites — Rodman Naval Station, Howard Air Force Base, and Fort Sherman — to support rotational deployments.

Over 1,000 U.S. troops are already participating in exercises alongside Panamanian forces, including Navy cruisers, fighter jets, and a Marine infantry company.

The renewed alliance also focuses on fighting cartels, improving border security, and investing in canal infrastructure. U.S. officials praised Panama for a 99% drop in illegal crossings at the Darién Gap.

Framed as a new era of cooperation, the U.S. is positioning this partnership as a regional push for sovereignty, security, and economic resilience — with the Panama Canal once again playing a central role.
