US Doubles Tariffs on India to 50%
The United States has doubled tariffs on Indian imports from 25 percent to 50 percent, escalating trade tensions between the two countries. The move targets a wide range of Indian exports, including garments, footwear, gems, furniture, chemicals, and textiles. Washington has framed the tariff hike as a response to India’s ongoing purchases of discounted Russian oil, which U.S. officials argue indirectly funds Moscow’s war in Ukraine.
The impact on Indian exporters could be severe. Industry groups warn that U.S.-bound shipments in key sectors may fall by as much as 70 percent, while total exports to the American market could decline by nearly half. Labor-intensive industries such as textiles and jewelry are expected to be hit hardest, raising concerns about large-scale job losses.
For American consumers, the consequences will likely appear as higher prices on imported goods. Retailers and manufacturers reliant on Indian inputs now face a difficult choice: absorb the added costs or pass them on to customers.
In New Delhi, policymakers are moving quickly to cushion the blow. The government is offering financial support to affected exporters and accelerating efforts to expand trade with other partners, including the U.K., Japan, and Australia. India’s strong domestic demand and diversified export portfolio may help soften the impact, but businesses anticipate near-term disruption.
While the tariff hike marks a sharp downturn in U.S.–India trade relations, analysts suggest that the long-term strategic alignment between the two democracies could eventually steady the relationship after this period of heightened friction. See clip

When heated, most materials weaken as atoms vibrate faster and spread apart. Rubber is unique—heating makes its polymer chains kink tighter, causing contraction. This property, along with its elasticity and durability, makes rubber indispensable. But are we running out?
