Baltimore Coal Ship Erupts in Fire Near Key Bridge

A Liberian-flagged bulk cargo ship, the W Sapphire, erupted into flames near Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge—recently the site of a major structural collapse. The vessel, loaded with coal and en route to Port Louis, Mauritius after departing Baltimore, became engulfed in smoke and fire, prompting widespread concern about a potential explosion. Fortunately, officials later confirmed the blaze was fully contained with no casualties.

Fire crews responded swiftly—including fireboats—and successfully extinguished the under-deck fire. Authorities moved the vessel away from the harbor to ensure safety, and confirmed that damage was limited to the ship itself, with no harm to port infrastructure or personnel.

Local witnesses captured dramatic footage of the incident. One sailor recounted hearing “a huge explosion,” and observed a towering plume of smoke rising above the ship. Crewmembers aboard the W Sapphire reportedly feared further explosions, though rescue and containment operations progressed efficiently.

This latest emergency comes as Baltimore continues to recover from the Key Bridge disaster and other recent industrial accidents. The port remains operational, but the episode is a stark reminder of how quickly risks can escalate when handling bulk cargoes such as coal.
